Interesting facts:

 

• The females and males of the initial phase have brownish heads. Their brown coloring extends into the first half of the body and transitions to blue green in the second half. They have dark brown lines radiating from their eyes and several vertical rows of diffuse bars on their flanks.
• The terminal phase males are green with scales having an orange brown outline; their eyes have radiating spoke-like bands. The juveniles are similar to the initial phase fish but lack the blue green coloration on the rear of their body.
• They have prominent parrot-like teeth in the front and one or two canines on the rear of their top jaw.
• Their caudal fin is slightly concave and their pectoral fins have 14 rays. Their body is covered with large scales.
• They are found in and around rocky coral reefs at depth between 10 and 85 feet. They reach a maximum length of 68 cm (26.8 inches).
• They forage during the day, feeding on algae and corals.
• They are considered excellent food fish due to their white meat and are sold commercially in most of the major markets in the greater Los Cabos área.

• Las hembras y machos de la fase inicial tienen la cabeza de color marrón. Su coloración marrón se extiende en la primera mitad del cuerpo y pasa al verde azul en la segunda mitad. Tienen líneas de color marrón oscuro que irradian de sus ojos y varias filas verticales de barras difusas en sus flancos.
• En la fase terminal los machos son de color verde con escamas que tienen un esquema marrón naranja; sus ojos han irradiando bandas radios similares. Los juveniles son similares a los peces fase inicial, pero carecen de la coloración verde azul en la parte posterior de su cuerpo.
• Tienen dientes prominentes en la parte delantera y uno o dos caninos en la parte posterior de su mandíbula superior, como los pericos.
